چکیده

Based on the results of a 3-year interdisciplinary study, this article presents an approach in which proactive information technology was introduced into homes, and discusses the derived design principles from a human-centered perspective. The application of proactive computing in homes will face particularly sensitive conditions, as familiar and reliable household elements remain strongly preferred. Since there is considerable resistance towards the increase of information technology in homes, both the calm system behaviors and the degree of variety in aesthetic designs will play major roles in the acceptance of proactive technology. If proactive technology will be an embedded part of a home’s structures and furniture, it needs to blend with the normal, cozy standards of a real living environment and aim to enhance the homeyness or the key social and aesthetic qualities of homes.

Challenges and Opportunities for Intelligibility and Control in Smart Homes

Several studies have reported on interaction challenges users face when confronted with proactive contextaware technologies that take actions on their behalf. To address these challenges, techniques have been proposed to improve intelligibility (understanding) of and control over context-aware systems for end-users. Proactive context-aware systems have not only been featured in several smart ho...

From Interaction Design to Experience Design: Ambient Intelligence and the Disappearing Computer

It seems like a paradox but it will soon become reality: The rate at which computers disappear will be matched by the rate at which information technology will increasingly permeate our environment and our lives [5]. Computers are increasingly becoming an important part of our day-to-day activities and determine many physical and social contexts of our life. The availability of computers is one...
